Meeting between Ambassador Flávio Roberto Bonzanini, Secretary-General of OPANAL and Ambassador Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil

On April 27, 2023, Ambassador Flávio Roberto Bonzanini, Secretary-General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), held a working meeting with Ambassador Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

 

During the meeting, both authorities discussed the current priorities for OPANAL, which include the substantive participation of OPANAL in various international meetings and forums; the efforts undertaken to establish a constructive dialogue with some States Parties to the Additional Protocols to the Treaty of Tlatelolco; the relations with other Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones; the increase in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation education activities and links with academia; and the strengthening of the international presence and professionalization of the Secretariat.

Ambassador Bonzanini also thanked Brazil for its strong support and active participation in the work of OPANAL and its various bodies; during the General Conference, as a Member of the Council, for assuming the Presidency of the Committee on Contributions and Administrative and Budgetary Matters (CCAAP) for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023), for taking charge of the coordination of OPANAL in New York uninterruptedly from 2016 to date, and for its substantive participation in the discussions and coordination of various technical groups established as subsidiary bodies.
