
On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, the Hon. Mr. Nelson Olivero, Ambassador of Guatemala in Mexico, visited the OPANAL headquarters to talk with the Secretary General of the Organization, Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares.
Ambassadors Olivero and Macedo Soares talked about the work of OPANAL during 2018; including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation education activities, as well as upcoming meetings of the Council of the Agency.
Guatemala is a Member State of the Council for the period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019 and during the months of May and June 2018 it holds the Presidency of said body of OPANAL. In this regard, Ambassador Olivera reiterated his country's commitment to the objectives and work of OPANAL.
The Government of the Republic of Guatemala signed the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) on February 14, 1967, and ratified it on February 6, 1970, thus being one of the founding Member States of OPANAL.
