On Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018, His Excellency Mr. Nelson Olivero, Ambassador of Guatemala to Mexico, visited OPANAL headquarters.

Ambassador Nelson Olivero met with Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares, Secretary-General of OPANAL, to talk about the activities of the Agency during 2018; among them, the activities of OPANAL on education for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as the forthcoming meetings of OPANAL Council.

Guatemala is a current Member State of OPANAL Council (January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2019). During May and June, 2018, Guatemala will assume the Chair of the Council of OPANAL. In this regard, Ambassador Olivera reiterated the commitment of the Government of Guatemala to the objectives and work of OPANAL.

The Government of the Republic of Guatemala signed the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) on February 14th, 1967, and ratified it on February 6th, 1970, thus being one of the the founding Member States of OPANAL.
