Uruguay chairs the 316th Meeting of the Council

H.E. Mr. Jorge Alberto Delgado Fernández, Permanent Representative of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to OPANAL and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, chaired the 316th Meeting of the Council of OPANAL, which took place on 20 September 2018 at the Headquarters of OPANAL.

During the opening of the 316th Meeting of the Council, Ambassador Delgado Fernández declared:

Después de 23 años, Uruguay vuelve a presidir el Consejo del OPANAL. Para nosotros es un honor y agradecemos a todos los Estados Miembros que nos hayan dado la confianza de poder presidirlo en los próximos años.

 

Ambassador Delgado Fernández also chaired the XXIV Session of the General Conference of OPANAL, held on 26 November 2015 in Mexico City. 

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay signed the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) on 14 February 1967 and ratified it on 20 August 1968, thus, is one of the founding Member States of OPANAL and an active Member of the Agency. 

During its 316th Meeting, the Council considered topics such as the XXVI Special Session of the General Conference of OPANAL, to be held on 15 November 2018; the participation of the Secretary-General of OPANAL, Amb. Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares, at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the next commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (26 September 2018).
