Member States and the Secretary-General of OPANAL participated in the 70th Session of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which is responsible for discussing disarmament and other matters related to international security. The First Committee was chaired by Ambassador Karel Jan Gustaaf van Oosterom of the Netherlands and took place from 8 October to 9 November 2015.
OPANAL Member States actively participated in promoting three unprecedented draft resolutions in the 70-year history of the United Nations: Humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, Ethical imperatives for a nuclear-weapon-free world, Humanitarian pledge for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons. Members also supported the draft resolution Taking forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations.
At the beginning of December 2015, these resolutions will be voted on in the plenary of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
