In 1959, the uninhabited Antartic continent was declared a demilitarized zone as well as a zone free from nuclear weapons. Similar to this multilateral agreement aimed at stemming the spread of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in specific areas and environments are the: Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies (1967) Treaty on the Prohibition of the Emplacement of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction on the Seabed and the Ocean Floor and in the Subsoil Thereof (1971).
